Robin Games has raised $7 million in a seed funding round for what founder Jill Wilson calls \u201clifestyle gaming,\u201d the games geared toward audiences for mobile games that aren\u2019t the typical hardcore targets. In an interview with GamesBeat, Wilson (a former executive at mobile game publisher Jam City) said the idea is to blend lifestyle content with free-to-play mobile games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI realized that I want to keep making games,\u201d said Wilson, who left Jam City and traveled the world with her husband before starting the company. \u201cAnd through my travels, and really actually long before that, I\u2019ve been really interested in making the type of content that we\u2019re going to be pursuing now, which is the hybrid of free-to-play mobile games and lifestyle content now like the lifestyle blogs, magazines, and lifestyle influencers on Instagram. We\u2019re fusing that two together to make what\u2019s a new type of entertainment or a new genre. We call it lifestyle gaming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
London Venture Partners (LVP) led the round, with additional funding from leaders across gaming, media and entertainment, including 1Up Ventures, Alpha Edison, Everblue Management, Firstminute Capital, GC Tracker Fund, Hearst Ventures, and Third Kind Venture Capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The team has nine employees and most of them are women. Most of the women have been making hit games together for years at places such as Jam City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Venice, California-based company aims to provide stylish, sophisticated fantasy content in an elevated way that is missing from the current gaming landscape, Wilson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI told people beforehand you\u2019d have to be a crazy person to start a free-to-play mobile games company right now,\u201d because of the competition, Wilson said. \u201cBut I am that crazy person because I found the exact right opportunity at the right time with the right team. So I\u2019m going for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The target is people who don\u2019t consider themselves gamers, but would like a more interactive experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI just want to give people these joyful experiences that I know are games that they can play,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cWe\u2019re creating kind of new types of fantasy content. And fantasy really has such a grounding in what traditional game fantasies are mythical types of fantasies, war types of fantasies, things like that. But, but there\u2019s so many other types of fantasies that exist in pop culture and with other demographics of people besides traditional gamers. We\u2019re trying to explore some of the more stylish, modern concepts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Robin Games raised its seed round in under two months and it was oversubscribed by $2 million, reflecting not only the market opportunity, but also the team\u2019s unique position to capitalize on that opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wilson led the teams behind some of the highest grossing mobile franchises to date, such as Cookie Jam and Panda Pop while at Jam City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI feel fortunate that I\u2019ve worked with everybody on the team,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cThey are a group of people who have failed and succeeded together, which I think is really important to be able to do both. We just started but we\u2019ve made some considerable progress in a short time we\u2019ve been up and running.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As for leaving Jam City, Wilson said, \u201cI loved my time at Jam City and I love those guys. My job there was focused on game development and our teams. And here, it\u2019s not only that, but also, you know, all of the strategic aspects of building and growing this company.
