Tencent invests $25m in Lockwood Publishing

This news comes months after Lockwood opened a new Lisbon studio to continue expanding it’s Avakin Life game project.

Founded by Joel Kemp and Halli Bjornsson in 2009, Lockwood Publishing began as a PlayStation developer and has evolved to become one of the UK’s top mobile games developers. It has more than 200 employees spread across four offices: Newcastle and Nottingham in the UK, as well as Lithuania and Portugal. Lockwood’s main game project Avakin Life have 200 million registered players since its 2013 launch and more than 1 million daily active players.

And now Chinese tech giant Tencent has led a $25 million investment into Lockwood Publishing, joining a number of previous Lockwood investors — including Novator Partners, Unity co-founder David Helgason, and CCP Games CEO Hilmar Pétursson. It also follows a number of notable investments for Tencent, with the Chinese company having recently led a $100 million funding round in esports company VSPN and grabbed a major stake in GTFO developer 10 Chambers.
