Tokyo-based game developer Grasshopper Manufacture announced that it had been acquired by NetEase Games.
The agreement to acquire Grasshopper Manufacture was signed on May 31, 2021, but was made public on Thursday, October 22. NetEase Games, however, didn’t disclose any terms of the deal or any other details.
Goichi’ Suda51′ Suda has been the leader of Grasshopper Manufacture for 23 years, and it is responsible for games like No More Heroes, Killer7, and Lollipop Chainsaw. The Japanese studio was previously bought by publisher GungHo Online Entertainment back in 2013.
“As we all know, NetEase Games has developed many excellent games in the past, and I have long been aware of NetEase’s creative capabilities,” said Goichi Suda. “When talking with NetEase about ‘developing more unique console games together’, we resonated. After a lot of thoughts, we’ve unanimously decided to ‘get together’ in the long term through deeper cooperation to create more good content for gamers. NetEase Games understands the strengths of Grasshopper Manufacture Inc. and is willing to support us, and is an extremely reliable partner. NetEase Games will be mainly responsible for advising on our business planning activities and providing sufficient funding for game development.”
NetEase Games is one of the largest internet technology and video game companies in China. The company develops as well as operates several mobile and PC games, such as the Fantasy Westward Journey franchise.
NetEase Games is a reliable partner for Grasshopper Manufacture, according to the company. It claims that NetEase Games understands its capabilities and is prepared to assist it.
According to the terms of the agreement, Grasshopper Manufacture will turn to NetEase Games for business planning advice and funding its future game development.
“We hope to give the studio creative freedom and sufficient resource support in order to empower said studio to create even more sensational works for gamers worldwide,” NetEase Games said in a released statement.
