Voodoo acquires a London-based mobile game studio Gumbug
Smash Supreme

Voodoo was the first to introduce “hypercasual mobile games,” or the ones that can be played in a matter of minutes. And now Voodoo uses the money it received as the first one on the market to acquire Gumbug, a mobile studio based in London.

“We are thrilled at the opportunity to work with Voodoo through a much closer relationship, combining our experience with theirs to continue to innovate and develop leading mobile game experiences. We knew immediately that Voodoo would be a perfect partner due to their industry knowledge and super-charged focus on data-driven development.”

Simon Hill, Gumbug CEO

Gumbug is the developer of Smash Supreme and Notorious 99 game titles. The studio was founded in 2013 by tree veterans out of Mind Candy who also had worked with Bossa Studios, Space Ape Games and Freedom Factory Studios.

Smash Supreme has over 1 million downloads on Google Play, whereas Notorious 99 just over 100,000. Smash Supreme was last updated in January, and Notorious 99 was last updated the month before that.

“What differentiates Voodoo compared to the other publishers is that when others start to do publishing, they try to detect games that work and then do a copy of that existing game. But great games are very rare. What we do instead is recognize there is a lot of talent in the world. Instead of trying to find games to copy, we find the talent. Then we try to coach them to show them everything we know, and help them succeed. Sometimes a creative just needs some information collection.”

Alexandre Yazdi, Voodoo CEO

According to Voodoo it has become the number one mobile game publisher, featuring over 300 million active users monthly. Voodoo had produced such casual games titles as Helix Jump, Baseball Boy, Snake vs Block, Hole.io, Purple Diver and Aquapark.io. Since its inception in 2013, Voodoo has reached more than a billion players and 2.6 billion downloads. In vid 2018th Voodoo has benefitted by an investment of over $ 200M from Goldman Sachs, subsequently having opened studios in Montreal, Berlin and Istambul.
