Frost Giant Studios Raises $5M To Develop New RTS Title

Frost Giant Studios has raised $5 million in funding to develop a new real-time strategy game. The investment will also be used to scale up the studio’s development team to work on its debut title.

The funding round was participated by South Korea VC Kona Venture Partners, co-founder of RXBar Jared Smith, Global Founders Capital, and games entrepreneur Eden Chen.

This will be the studio’s second funding round. Earlier in October last year, Frost Giant Studio raised 4.7 million in a seed round. The funding round was led by veteran Bitkraft Ventures, 1 Up Ventures, Riot Games, GC Tracker, and Griffin Gaming Partners. Therefore, after the latest funding round, the studio has $9.7 million to date.

“This really is the capital that enabled us to hire the team and will enable us to build a prototype. We really were fortunate to have a diverse group, all of whom have specific expertise in games, get behind us,” Morten said. “Aspirationally, we would love to have something that’s ready to launch in [under] four years. But coming out of Blizzard, ‘when it’s done’ is very much a mantra that I think both Tim Campbell and I take to heart. We’re much more geared around trying to build a great game than we are around trying to hit any particular date.”

Found in 2020, Frost Giant Studios is headed by Blizzard Entertainment alumni Tim Morten and Tim Campbell. Morten previously worked as a production developer for the StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty game, while Campbell was the campaign designer for Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. Morten said the investment would enable Frost Giant Studio to create a prototype of their new real-time strategy game within the next four years.

Thanks to the huge cash pile, Frost Giant also hired another former Blizzard veteran James Anhalt, who worked as the lead designer for StarCraft II. Anhalt spent 20 years at Blizzard before joining the company and will oversee Frost Giant’s engineering projects.

“I am excited to work with this outstanding and talented team to bring fun RTS gameplay to as many fans as possible. Frost Giant’s strong foundation gives us the ability and opportunity to create RTS games that appeal to more players than ever before” Anhalt commented.
